Diablo 4 Duriel, King of Maggots Strategy Writeup
The fight will begin by pitting you against two Pangs of Duriel first, jutting out of two holes in the ground. These have about the same toughness as Elites and will hit relatively hard with poison damage, caused by multiple poison projectiles that they'll be shooting out. As a general rule, you'll want to try your best to kill these whenever they are around. After some time, they'll give way to the real Duriel as they hide underground for the moment. Duriel can be quite fast for his large size and will hit like a truck for the most part, especially if you lack poison damage mitigation. His basic melee swipes can be hard to avoid and won't be telegraphed too much, despite also hitting relatively hard. When he winds up one of his mantis-like claws and then slams it into the ground, be sure to dodge the point of impact, but don't move quite too far from him so you'll have a good window to dodge the poison projectiles that follow, along with the poison puddles they'll make. If you see a safe path back to Duriel, close the distance and deal your damage. Whenever he starts to heave and his stomach-maw starts to open a few times, move as far as you can. This is a sign that he'll start shooting dung balls from his stomach-maw which deal a sizable amount of damage. Being too close when he shoots them out may have you eat multiple dung balls, as they come from a single point of origin, and will reduce your health faster than you can say 'crap.'
Once you get his Life down past the first arrow, he'll start summoning multiple Plague Maggots to complicate the battlefield further, and he might also start burrowing underground to call out his Pangs to join him. Dispatch any summoned Enemies as quickly as you can, especially the Pangs of Duriel whenever they aren't hiding in their holes. During this phase, you'll also want to watch out for his most devastating attack, which is when he uses both his hind legs and his claws to do a Wild Charge straight toward you. Dodge out of the way or get Stunned, and try not to be too eager to close the distance afterward. Wait until he stabs the ground with his claws one last time for purchase before you close in and let loose your own onslaught.
At about thirty percent Life, he'll be more aggressive with his attacks and start mixing up his entire moveset. Keep calm and assess the battlefield at all times, taking into account the poison puddles and prioritizing killing the Pangs of Duriel whenever they're on the surface. He'll add one more attack to his arsenal during this phase, which is a simple melee strike attack after a huge wind-up, so simply dodge out of the way when it's telegraphed. Like most Bosses, this will be a fight of mental endurance, and you'll need to be patient until you wear out his Life completely.
Attacks & Counters
Attack | Counter |
Phase 1 |
|
Mantis Sweep: Duriel will sweep his mantis-like claws at you. All his melee attacks inflict poison damage on hit. | Dodge out of the way or use damage mitigation |
Poison Rain: Duriel will raise his mantis-like claw and plunge it into the ground in front of him, creating a puddle of poison at the impact point while also causing poison projectiles to shoot out. The impact points of these poison projectiles will also create smaller puddles of poison | Dodge away from the initial impact point and stay clear of the smaller impact points afterward |
Dung Spit: Duriel will start heaving as his stomach-maw breathes in before shooting balls of waste outward | Move away when he starts heaving to allow yourself to dodge the moving balls of waste |
Phase 2 | |
Pestilent Call - Maggot Infestation: Duriel raises his mantis-like claws as he slightly tiptoes on his hind legs before causing Plague Maggots to drop down from the ceiling | Use attacks that hit multiple targets at a time to quickly dispatch the minor Enemies |
Wild Charge: After a quick shout, Duriel will begin charging right at you, while periodically striking his claws in ahead of him to keep his momentum. Getting hit by this will get you Stunned and cause large amounts of damage | Move out of the way of his charge, and wait for the final time he strikes his claws before you move in and deal damage |
Pestilent Call - Pangs: Duriel dives underground and then comes out, bringing with him one or two Pangs of Duriel. These Pangs periodically shoot out multiple poison projectiles which travel faster than the ones that come out of Duriel's Poison Rain attack | Prioritize defeating any Pangs of Duriel whenever they are targettable |
Phase 3 | |
Charged Strike: Duriel will begin to wind up his mantis-like claw, similar to the start of a Poison Rain attack, but will summon or shoot and poison projectiles or puddles. Instead, he'll simply deliver a strong physical blow right in front of him | Dodge out of the way as he finishes winding up |
