Masterworking in Diablo 4 is the new End Game crafting system introduced in Loot Reborn. Masterworking allows players to increase the value of existing Affixes through 12 Masterworking ranks. These upgrades are done at The Blacksmith and require special crafting materials acquired from the Nightmare Dungeon called The Pit of the Artificers. Masterworking improves the overall strength of all existing Affixes and every 4th Rank will give a massive 25% boost to a random affix currently equipped. It is ideally done after you have acquired your desired Affixes through Tempering and only works on Ancestral Legendary and Unique Items.

Diablo 4 Masterworking Guide
How to Unlock Masterworking
The new crafting system becomes available after obtaining materials from completing The Pit of Artificers, which is a new End Game Nightmare Dungeon in World Tier 4. Completing a single run of the dungeon will reward players with Masterworking materials and will unlock the next tier of The Pit of Artificers. You can now do Masterworking upgrades once you visit The Blacksmith at any town.
Masterworking Mechanics in Diablo 4
Masterworking is one of the newest crafting systems that will upgrade the stats of ALL AFFIXES on gear. Each time a gear is upgraded at every 4th tier, one of the equipped affixes will receive a massive upgrade with a 25% stat increase and it will turn blue on the tooltip. If that same affix receives another upgrade, it will turn Yellow, then, in rare cases, an Orange if improved for the third time.
For non-milestone ranks, which are 1-3, 5-7, and 9-11, these upgrades will result in a 5% increase for all existing affixes. There are also no animations for these upgrades and the upgrades come at an increasing cost as you go up the Masterworking ranks.
Masterworking Crafting Materials
- Obducite (Magic Crafting Material)
- Ingolith (Rare Crafting Material)
- Neathiron (Legendary Crafting Material)
The Masterworking materials correspond to each of the Masterworking ranks. Obducide is needed for Ranks 1-4, Ingolith for 5-8, and Neathiron for 9-12. Players may also avail the Transmutation services of The Occultist for crafting materials. Aside from these crafting materials, players will also require additional items to complete a Masterworking upgrade.
