Runewords in Diablo 4 are special combinations of Runes that, when socketed into Weapons or Armor, grant powerful effects. Introduced in Vessel of Hatred DLC, Diablo 4 Runewords are made up of two types of Runes, the Rune of Ritual, which generates the Offering (the power or energy required to trigger an effect), and the Rune of Invocation, which consumes the Offering to trigger a specific effect. Runes only function when paired together in a two-socket item and players cannot equip the same Rune twice. Additionally, players can have a maximum of two Runewords active at any time, adding a layer of strategy and customization to gear choices in combat.
How to get Runewords in D4 Vessel of Hatred
To create a Runeword, players need to socket both a Rune of Ritual and a Rune of Invocation into an item that has two Sockets. Items such as Chest, Leg, and Two-Handed weapon slots are eligible for Runewords, and now even Helm slots can hold a Runeword thanks to the addition of a new Socke
-
Rune of Ritual: This rune generates Offerings, which are a form of energy needed to activate a specific effect. The conditions for generating Offerings vary depending on the Rune of Ritual you use (e.g., standing still, hitting enemies, evoking another class's power, etc.).
-
Rune of Invocation: This rune consumes the Offerings generated by the Rune of Ritual to trigger an effect. The effect can range from reducing cooldowns to summoning creatures or boosting stats. Some Invocations also have an Overflow mechanic, which triggers extra effects if you generate more Offerings than required.
Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred Runes and the Offering System
Runes in this system operate based on a resource called Offering, which is generated by Runes of Ritual upon meeting specific conditions. Once enough Offering is accumulated, Runes of Invocation consume it to trigger their effects.
The more challenging the requirement for the Rune of Ritual, the more Offering it will produce. On the flip side, stronger Runes of Invocation will demand more Offering to activate, creating a balance between the two systems.
Vessel of Hatred Overflow Mechanic
In some cases, players may generate more Offering than is necessary to activate a Rune of Invocation. When this happens, the Overflow mechanic comes into play.
Many Runes of Invocation are designed to benefit from Overflow by applying an additional bonus to their effects, temporarily increasing their power for a short duration. This adds an extra layer of strategy when managing Offering.
Diablo 4 Rune Rarities
Any Rune of Ritual can be paired with any Rune of Invocation, offering great flexibility. There are three rarity tiers for Runes—Magic, Rare, and Legendary—and as their rarity increases, so does the strength of their effects, making higher-tier Runes incredibly powerful when paired strategically-
