The Dark Citadel in Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred offers a new cooperative PvE end-game experience, merging multiplayer elements with intense dungeon combat and challenging boss battles. Players can enter The Dark Citadel in groups ranging from 2 to 4 members, facing intricate bosses that demand coordination and splitting paths to progress. Teams can also use the new Marker System for non-verbal communication.

The Dark Citadel can be found in the overworld map with the following Icon: the dark citade icon vessel of hatred wiki guide50px[Map Link]

How to Unlock The Dark Citadel in Diablo 4

  • The Dark Citadel becomes available once you reach the endgame. You will have to complete a Priority Quest called Crater of Lost Souls. Received from Ormus at Upper Kurast, you will have to talk with Priestess Cualli who is addressing a mob regarding the Khazra.
  • Players need to unlock Torment difficulty to be able to receive this Quest, and will not be able to unlock it in lower difficulties.

The Dark Citadel Ancient Nexus in Diablo 4

As previously mentioned, The Dark Citadel can be found in the Ancient Nexus, and players gain acces to it during the Priority Quest called Crater of Lost Souls. Players won't be able to access The Dark Citadel until the quest is completed.

The Dark Citadel holds three separate wings, each with their own secrets to unlock and demonic plans to unravel. Brute force will only let you venture so far; the cooperation of your allies is the key to besting each Wing before finally facing off against the final boss.

The Khazra and the Dark Citadel

The Dark Citadel is located at the bottom of a massive crater, where the Khazra are harnessing the crater’s energy to summon their dark lord. As their efforts near fruition, players must journey through this complex maze to stop a new evil from being unleashed on Sanctuary. The Dark Citadel introduces harsh, demanding encounters featuring complex mechanics, such as boss abilities that require players to interact with objects to reflect projectiles. This end-game content also comes with new currencies, which can be spent on themed cosmetic sets.

Teamwork in the Dark Citadel & the Party Finder in Diablo 4

Although the Dark Citadel can be tackled by just two players, it is designed primarily for teams of four. Many of the challenges players will face inside The Dark Citadel, and specially Boss Fights, emphasize this decision. Players have to cooperate and coordinate in order to overcome these challenges.

With the introduction of the Vessel of Hatred expansion, the new Diablo 4 Party Finder makes it much easier for players to join groups for this new content, reducing the need to rely on external communities.

Diablo 4 The Dark Citadel Rewards

Completing The Dark Citadel rewards players with weekly caches that contain powerful loot and unique Dark Citadel cosmetics. Rewards for the Dark Citadel are updated weekly, providing an incentive for players to complete this co-op end-game activity regularly.

In addition to the usual loot, players can obtain a new item called the Scroll of Retempering, used to reset the Tempering Durability on items. These scrolls are single-use and have a small chance of dropping outside the Dark Citadel as well.

The Dark Citadel offers new cosmetics—players can collect Citadel Coins, a valuable currency held by the citadel's inhabitants, by defeating Elites and Bosses and use them to buy themed cosmetics. Another new currency, Khazra Horns, will be likely used at the Alchemist for a new Transmutation process.

The Dark Citadel Notes & Tips

  • Dungeons are instanced domains that offer a sanctuary for brave adventurers. They are thematically related to the region in which they are found, but their layout is randomized. Each Dungeon has its own Boss as well as a related Legendary Aspect that they reward, once completed. Players are also awarded 30 Renown points by completing a dungeon.
