The Tree of Whispers in Diablo 4 becomes available after players have successfully defeated Lilith, thus releasing Sanctuary from her shackles. Besides the tree in itself, there are a number of hanging heads that will interact with players once approached. They will offer players debts to be completed in exchange for "power, wealth, and whatever it is you desire."
How Does the Tree of Whispers Work?
After your first interaction with the Tree of Whispers and its hanging heads, Whispers of the Dead will become active. They will appear on any given random subregion of the map and are only available for a limited amount of time. This means that once that amount of time has passed, a new set of Whispers of the Dead Quests will become available. Completing these "debts" will earn players Grim Favor, alongside Gold and XP.
How do I unlock the Tree of Whispers?
Players have to complete all Main Quests, in order to be able to unlock the Tree of Whispers. A Priority Quest called Whispers of the Dead, will automatically appear in The Writhing Mire, Hawezar.
After interacting with the tree, players will be able to find it with this icon on the map. [Map Link]
What are Grim Favors?
Grim Favors are the currency the Tree of Whispers uses to grant players rewards. They will have to complete determined quests that become available for a short time. Completing one of these, grants a different amount of Grim Favors, depending on the background their icon on the map has. They may grant 1 Grim Favor, 3 Grim Favors, or 5 Grim Favors. If players don't earn EXACTLY 10 Grim Favors, but a few more, the surplus will be received once the first ten are obtained.
- For example, if you have 9 Grim Favors, and complete a Dungeon that rewards you +5 Grim Favors more. Your Grim Favors Bar will be full (10 Grim Favors), and once you interact with the Tree of Whispers to claim your cache, you will automatically earn the remaining 4 Grim Favors.
Also note that, once players obtain 10 or more 10 Grim Favors, Whispers of the Dead become unavailable on the map, thus forcing players to return to the Tree to receive their rewards.
Players can learn the amount of Grim Favors they will earn by completing a quest, by selecting the desired Quest and checking the Rewards section.
They can also track the amount of Grim Favors they possess at any time from the Map. A bar will fill out when Grim Favors are being collected, and once it is full, players have to return to the Tree of Whispers to claim a valuable cache of their choice.
Note that some markers on the Map, like Dungeons for example, can overlap and also add the Whisper of the Dead rewards. This may allow you to do both missions in one go. You can complete the Dungeon, while also completing the Whisper of the Dead objective.

All Tree of Whispers Rewards in Diablo 4
In the following table, you can see the different kinds of caches the Tree of Whispers may provide. Once players give the Tree of Whispers 10 Grim Favors, they have to select one of three possible rewards. These rewards are randomly chosen caches that focus on an equipped item type but also contain gold, gems, and crafting materials. Note that these caches are bound to account on pickup and cannot be sold.
Caches named "Greater Collection of..." are of Legendary rarity and drop a guaranteed item of that quality.
The World Tier in which you are playing may affect the availability of certain Items. For example, Glyphs and Nightmare Sigils start dropping once you enter Nightmare difficulty. Glyphs are used for Paragon Boards and Nightmare Sigils are items that enable Nightmare Dungeons.
