Vessel of Hatred is the first premium expansion for Diablo 4. It picks up the story after the events of the main game, taking players to the Nahantu jungle area, previously explored in Diablo 2. Announced during Blizzcon on November 3rd, 2023, Vessel of Hatred is set to include a never-before-seen Class in the franchise, and will release on October 8th, 2024

What to Expect from Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred

Vessel of Hatred picks up after the events of the main Diablo 4 story, after Neyrelle's sails with the soulstone that has Mephisto, one of the three prime evils, trapped. Players can explore a new Location to Diablo 4, but previously seen in older titles such as Diablo 2.

Players new to the Diablo 4 game, who wish to begin with the expansion will also have the option to completely skip the main campaign to directly experience the new chapter. For added context, players who start the new chapter with the Vessel of Hatred directly will be given a recap of the events in the main campaign, so that they can also follow along the main storyline with some background information along with the rest of the base players for the game.

New Region: Nahantu

Expand Sanctuary to discover new Towns and bygone civilizations shrouded in the vast jungle of Nahantu. Battle courageously through new dungeons and Strongholds and take on new enemies from ferocious demons to warring Tribes, the likes of which could only thrive amidst the hellish overgrowth of Kurast or the barren desert of Teganze.

The Spiritborn, apex predator of the jungle, is poised to strike. Battle with styles and mystical synergies that could only be awakened deep beneath the jungle’s canopy with an entirely new class to the iconic Diablo series. Learn more about the Spiritborn on July 18 PT.

Available in-game now, all players in Diablo IV can have a new companion to call their own. Aiding with Gold and Material pick-up, Pets will serve as your trusty sidekick throughout the dangerous world of Sanctuary.

Log-in now to receive a Quest in-game that unlocks Pets for your Character. Upon Completion, you’ll earn Asheara the Canine Pet in-game.

The Story of Vessel of Hatred Diablo 4

The campaign will continue to tell the tale of Diablo 4 and Mephisto's plans for Sanctuary. Veteran players can now return to a previously-loved location, the land of Nahatu. This time, trekking through jungle terrain. The story of this expansion centers around Neyrell who was last seen traveling south with Mephisto while following the steps of the Prophet of Light.

Spoiler Warning: For those who wish to skip the main storyline and start their campaign directly with the Vessel of Hatred, read on below for some background information on where the story of Neyrelle and Mephistis left off. This is a spoiler warning for those who have not played the main campaign and wish to play through it.

The Soulstone

At the Climax of the Diablo 4 Campaign, Neyrelle binds Mephisto's essence to a Soulstone which was initially meant for Lillith. This proceeds to lead to the ending and the epilogue of the story. This also lays out the setting for the expansion, with the Soulstone still with Neyrelle as she travels with Mephisto at the start fo the new DLC.

Neyrelle's Final Letter

At the end of the final main campaign, the scene displays and Narrates Neyrelle's final letter left to Norath as she ventures south with Mephesthis. The Letter Reads:

I spent a lot of time learning this code, so I hope you remember how to read it, Lorath. Because you are the lat Horadrim now. My mother would have wanted me to stay with you. She believed the Horadrim had all the answers. I don't know if she'd recognized this person I'm becoming. It's hard for me to think about her right now. But then I remember you and Donan. You weren't "all-knowing Horadrim". You were bitter. You were uncertain. But you were always true friends. That's what I hold onto because there is so much further to go. Your imperfection gave me hope. And we will need it to face what comes next. To face him... and his brothers. I don't know how much time I have, but there has to be a better answer. And I have to find it. Alone. I know you'll want to go with me. But people have alredy died because I was not careful enough. I can't risk you too. If I've misjudged, the world is going to need you to survive and clean up the mistakes I leave behind. I know you don't want to hear this, but you don't get to quit. Not again. Wish me well, Lorath. Because if everything works out as I am hoping... We will never see each other again.

Final Scene

As Neyrelle's letter is narrated, the final scene of the campaign displays Neyrelle as she travels on boat with the Blue Soulstone with Mephisto in hand. The implications of the ending are endless since it is known that the Soulstone always corrupts its owner, leaving an open-ending for the continuation of Neyrelle's and Mephisto's storyline yet to be revealed in The Vessel of Hatred.

Mephisto

Mephisto: Mephisto is the Lord of hatred and the father of Lillith. Neyrelle has chosen to imprison him there over Lillith because he potentially poses a large at the end of the main campaign, he remains in the Soulstone that Neyrelle carries.

Neyrelle

Neyrelle: Neyrelle, also known as Magpie, leads as the main protagonist in Diablo 4. Throughout the game, she travels Sanctuary to search for artifacts of the Horadim. At the end of the campaign, she travels with Mephisto with her in the Soulstone. Neyrelle struggles to control perhaps the worst possible travel companion: the Prime Evil Mephisto.
