Tempering in Diablo 4 is a gear upgrade system that allows players to add Affixes from Temper Manuals obtained throughout the Sanctuary. Tempers are applied by visiting The Blacksmith and can be done throughout the leveling and End Game Content. Tempering allows gear customization by adding a selection of affixes to Legendary Items and Rare Items to complement specific Diablo 4 Builds and playstyles. It is important to note that Tempering doesn't work on Unique Items, which means they cannot have additional affixes.

How Does Tempering Work in Diablo 4?

Tempering requires obtaining Temper Manuals which contain a fixed set of Affixes, and they come in 3 rarities: Magic, Rare, and Legendary Temper Manuals. The higher the rarity, the better the range of the stats that you can apply to Legendary Items and Rare Items. Some Temper Manuals are usable by all classes, but most of it are class-specific and tied up to certain class playstyles and builds.

Temper Manuals are obtained as a reward for defeating Bosses, World Bosses, and Nightmare Dungeons. They can be used indefinitely and stored in the Codex of Power once they are learned. In the event that you acquire the same Temper Manual, there's a chance that you will get a higher rarity or a higher stat range for that item. When you are ready to start Tempering Items, visit The Blacksmith in the nearest town to get the upgrade done. How to Temper Your Gear in Diablo 4?

When you first acquire a Temper Manual, right-click on the item to learn it and it will show up on your Tempering Recipes in Codex of Power. Next, visit The Blacksmith to get help with the process and choose the Temper Manual that you want to use for the roll. When choosing the Temper Manual, take note that each of these manuals contains a fixed set of 4 Affixes and one of these will be added to the item. Every time you complete the Temper, you will pay the service with Gold, Veiled Crystals, and Baleful Fragments or Coiling Wards. If you didn't get the Affix that you need for your build, you can attempt another temper, pay the fee, and consume 1 out of 5 Temper Rerolls counter.

NOTE: The first roll on both of the Temper Slots is for free, and will not consume the reroll counter but the item's Temper Counter is shared for both manuals. It is ideal to keep the rerolls available for both slots so you can have a good chance of acquiring the preferred affix.
