Helltide is a timed event in Diablo 4. Helltide events will start to trigger in areas of Sanctuary, once players reach Nightmare difficulty and complete the Priority Quest called The Helltide Rises. Helltide events have their own special icon on the map, and once activated, the area becomes corrupted and invaded by hell forces. Defeating Enemies and completing events while in this area, grants players Aberrant Cinders, which, in turn, are the currency used inside the Helltide areas to unlock their own chests called Tortured Gifts.

How to unlock Diablo 4 Helltide Events?
To have access to Helltide Events, players must reach the Sanctuary once they've unlocked Nightmare difficulty and complete the Priority Quest called The Helltide Rises.
There's also no specific area or location to trigger Helltide Events as they occur randomly and unpredictably. It provides an element of surprise to excite players. Helltide events will persist from 90 to 120 minutes. This will give players ample time to travel.
What happens during Helltide in Diablo 4?
Players can expect several significant changes that may present during these Helltide Events. When a Helltide event begins, the world undergoes a sinister transformation as the sky turns red, meteors begin to fall from the sky, and new monsters will also appear in the area. Everything will be more challenging and by killing monsters, they will drop what is called Aberrant Cinders.
During this period, Demons will also be roaming the zone, and killing them have a high chance of dropping Aberrant Cinders. This is an effective way to farm and will also periodically drop rare loots.
How to Identify Events in Diablo 4
A Helltide event that is happening can be identified simply with the in-game notifications that alert players when a Helltide Event is starting nearby. Players can also look at their map, or they can keep an eye out for visual cues and changes to the environment. This could include the sky turning red and unfamiliar creatures emerging in the area. In the mini map, you will also see a ring surrounding an area and this indicates the covered land for the specific event.
Helltide Duration in Diablo 4
Helltide events have a limited duration of 90 to 120 minutes, and players have to complete them before they expire. The duration can be seen on the upper right-hand corner of the screen beside the minimap. If the timer runs out, players will have to wait for a new Helltide Event to happen.
Diablo 4 Tortured Gifts
Tortured Gifts are locked chests that are unique to the Helltide Areas. Each Tortured Gift found in a Helltide area, contains different loots, and can only be opened by exchanging the amount of Aberrant Cinders that they indicate beneath their name. Chests usually require 75 up to 150 Aberrant Cinders to open.
Tortured Gifts have a fairly high chance of dropping Legendary items, making Helltides a sought-after event.
Use the map in-game to find markers where these Tortured Gifts are placed during Helltide Events.
Helltide Rewards in Diablo 4
There are substantial rewards for participating in Helltide Events, making them highly sought-after encounters for those who already reached the Endgame content. Players can obtain rare and powerful loot and can enhance their combat prowess and offer unique bonuses to their current builds. The rewards offered for Helltide Events give players depth when it comes to customizing builds and creating strategic possibilities for endgame content.
Killing enemies will also drop random loots. When an Elite appears in Helltide, they often drop valuable loot that can be essential to improve your build.
How to obtain Aberrant Cinders in Diablo 4?
Aberrant Cinders is the special currency players can only obtain while playing a Helltide Event. Once they are within the event area, Enemies defeated by them will randomly drop Aberrant Cinders. Completing events also grants Aberrant Cinders.
Players can see the total amount of Aberrant Cinders they possess at any time, by looking at the number below this icon that can be found in the top-right corner of the screen when in a Helltide Area.
It is important to note that dying, while carrying any number of Aberrant Cinders, will reduce the amount possessed by half. The half lost can't be recovered anymore.
You can temporarily leave a Helltide area without losing any Cinders as long as you return before the Helltide ends. All unspent Cinders are lost when a Helltide ends.
Aberrant Cinders are used to open chests called Tortured Gifts that are unique to the Helltide events. They contain loot of a specific item slot.
Diablo 4 Helltide Events
Helltide Events are similar to the events that players will encounter in the standard, non-PvP zones. Except, Helltide Events will mean stronger and deadlier enemies. During this event, enemies will drop Aberrant Cinders and upon completion of the event, players will be awarded more Aberrant Cinders. During events, it is important to stay alive to farm more Aberrant Cinders. Death during these instances will cause players to drop half of collected Aberrant Cinders.
During our playthrough, we encountered 3 events in the game:
- Portal Invasion (+Mastery: Defeat Elite)
- Raze the Effigies (Destroy enemy structures)
- Pressure Plates (Stand on plates while defeating enemies)
Portal Invasion
Portal Invasions are one of the many Helltide events found in the World Tier: Nightmare. Participating in this event will require players to survive 7 invasions that will lead to killing an elite, and will award with a Mastery Level, which will award more Aberrant Cinders.
Pressure Plates
Similar to the Portal Invasion, this Helltide Event will require players to survive enemy assaults while standing on pressure plates. The only difference is a timer will be visible and a Mastery Level can be unlocked if it's completed before the timer runs out. Similarly, dying during this event will cause players to lose half of collected Aberrant Cinders.
Raze the Effigies
During this event, Raze the Effigies did not show a Mastery Level. The goal is to destroy the enemy structures while enemies will swarm toward them to defend. Killing enemies within the area will randomly drop Aberrant Cinders, and completing the event will grant more Aberrant Cinders.
