Malignant Tunnels are special locations in Diablo 4. These corrupted dungeon-like locations have sprung out in the wake of Lilith's machinations throughout the game's Main Story Campaign and as a consequence of the events that occur at the end of the story. Malignant Tunnels are made available for players to explore in the Season of the Malignant, the first Season of the game. Malignant Tunnels serve as dens for hordes of Malignant Creatures that the players will have to encounter, capture, and defeat to purge Sanctuary of this new corruption. It is expected that the player will dive into and clear Malignant Tunnels as they go through the new questline, starting with the new Quest Burning from Within. Malignant Tunnels are marked on the Map with the same gate-looking icon as Dungeons, but differentiated with a green leaf. Hovering over them on the map shows the player which type of Malignant Invoker they must bring to interact with the Outgrowth waiting at the end.
Malignant Tunnels Rewards in Diablo 4
Players will mainly want to clear out Malignant Tunnels to be able to farm Caged Hearts with stronger stats than can be commonly found, from Malignant Hearts that they can attempt to capture at the end of each one. After clearing out hordes of Malignant Creatures, Malignant Tunnels promise to have two wretched pulsing objects on the ground called Outgrowths. After crafting Malignant Invokers that correspond with different types of Malignant Hearts, players will be able to interact with these Outgrowths to force a Fully Corrupted Malignant Creature out of them, using the corresponding type of Malignant Invokers. One of the two Outgrowths will always be a Wrathful Outgrowth, which has no Invoker. The other Outgrowth will be a specific type dictated by the Malignant Tunnel. An Elite Enemy will spawn from the Outgrowth, which will drop a Malignant Heart when killed, which players can then capture for a strong Caged Heart of the corresponding type. It's worth noting that slaying the Malignant Creatures that spawn from these Outgrowths is not the only way to obtain Caged Hearts. These Items will be obtainable from Elite Enemies that have been powered up into Malignant Creatures across the whole of Sanctuary. Nevertheless, Blizzard has expressed that this will be one of the best ways to find all thirty-two Malignant Hearts, as the Caged Hearts acquired from Outgrowths in Malignant Tunnels will have better stats, and will be locked to a certain type.
What are Malignant Invokers in Diablo 4?
Malignant Invokers are special Items that players can use to interact with Outgrowths of different types at the end of each Malignant Tunnel, after clearing the objectives therein. Using Malignant Invokers to interact with the Outgrowths will spawn a Malignant Elite Enemy matching the type of the Invoker, which will drop a Malignant Heart of the same type as well when killed. Attempting to capture the Malignant Heart by interacting with it will spawn a stronger version of the Enemy the player just killed. Killing this stronger version will drop a Caged Heart for the player, which will be stronger than the usual Caged Hearts dropped by random Malignant Elites. So far there are only three types of Malignant Invokers, to match the types of Outgrowths - Brutal, Devious, and Vicious. Players are also able to create an Uncertain Invoker Cache for forty of the three types of Malignant Ichor, which drops a random Malignant Invoker, with a chance to drop a rare Wrathful Malignant Invoker
How to Get Malignant Invokers in Diablo 4?
Players can rarely get Malignant Invokers through random drops across Sanctuary, but more reliably, through crafting with Cormond. Players will be able to start crafting these special Items through Cormond's services during the new Quest, A Plague of Hatred. One Malignant Invoker will cost fifty Malignant Ichor of the same color as the desired Invoker's color, twenty each of Malignant Ichor of the other two colors, and a thousand Gold.
How Many Malignant Tunnels are in Diablo 4?
As stated in Blizzard's article regarding the Season of the Malignant, it seems there will be a total of only six Malignant Tunnels throughout Sanctuary, which make up a whole "tunnel system". As mentioned, each Malignant Tunnel will have two Outgrowths that players will get to interact with, and one of them will always spawn a Malignant Creature type that matches the Malignant Tunnel that it's encountered in.
All Malignant Tunnels in Diablo 4
Malignant Tunnels are said to have less of the aspects of Dungeons that players have expressed to be dragging and unnecessary, like running back and forth for objectives, and will prove to entail more straightforward monster-clearing for coveted rewards. The inside of the tunnels has been revealed to be filled with tighter halls and spaces, and visually unappealing graphics, to go along with its name and general theme. Similar to Dungeons, the layouts within the Malignant Tunnels are randomized, but will house the same objectives and similar Enemies.
