The Cost of Knowledge is a Main Quest in Diablo 4. The Cost of Knowledge can be found at Fractured Peaks. Main Quests are mandatory missions that players must complete in order to finish the storyline and reach the next difficulty level. Main Quests must be done sequentially and are unlocked only after completing the previous Main Quest/s.

Diablo IV The Cost of Knowledge Walkthrough
At the end of Storming the Gates, you learn that Vhenard is working with Lilith to find and free her son Rathma. Head down the steps in the Mourning Shore and turn left. As you approach her, you'll hear Vhenard praising Lilith. Speak to Neyrelle when you reach Vhenard for a much needed mother and daughter conversation. Unfortunately, no matter how hard Neyrelle pleads, Vhenard doesn't budge from finishing the runes Lilith has convinced her leads to a trove of knowledge. Deluding herself into thinking Neyrelle wants it all for herself, Vhenard becomes hostile and initiates a boss fight against the two of you.
Vhenard is invulnerable for the duration of the boss fight. She spawns two Hell Spawns who must be defeated in this first phase. While you deal with them, you will also have to avoid some spells cast by Vehnard. After you successfully defeat them, Vhenard loses about a third of her health.
During the next phase, she spawns three Hell Spawns and a few Hell Stormers. Only the Hell Spawns have to be defeated, but if you're feeling overwhelmed, take some time to take care of the smaller demons too. Like last time, defeat all three Hell Spawns and Vhenard loses another third of health. In the final phase, she spawn four Hell Spawns, a Pit Lord and several Hell Stormers. Defeat all four Hell Spawns and Vehnard loses her remaining health, ending the boss fight.
Speak to Neyrelle after defeating Vhenard. Although she's a little bit bitter about you killing her mother, she understands that it was for her protection and asks you to obtain some blessed blood from Reverend Mother Prava. The quest will end, rewarding you with 11,500 XP, 1,050 Gold, and the Mother's Knife. The next quest that unlocks is Light's Guidance.
