Diablo 4 How to Summon Echo of Varshan

To summon Echo of Varshan, players will need 1 each of a Gurgling Head, Blackened Femur, and Trembling Hand, and additionally, the Malignant Heart, which will all be consumed. Summoning him at World Tier 3 will take a Gurgling Head, Blackened Femur, and Trembling Hand while you'll need all three in addition to a Malignant Heart to summon him at World Tier 4. These body parts can be acquired from Tree of Whispers caches as you complete Whispers of the Dead events. Additionally, you can also craft them at random through The Alchemist, in exchange for one of the other body parts, Veiled Crystals, some gold, and either an Abstruse Sigil, Coiling Ward, or Baleful Fragment, depending on which body part you choose to pay. When you have a whole set, depending on which World Tier you're playing on, head into the Malignant Burrow and find the Malignant Altar to consume the parts and summon the Echo of Varshan.

Diablo 4 Echo of Varshan Strategy Writeup

Echo of Varshan will start the fight with a shield which will last for a few seconds. Essentially this will act as a secondary Life pool for him so melt through it with your attacks, while minding his own attack patterns. He will consistently lash out at you with his tendrils while shooting out spiraling putrid balls. This may or may not do a lot of damage to you depending on your build, but it can be dodged with good timing. Keep close to him as you do, but be wary of the different ways he can shoot out the putrid balls. He can shoot anywhere from two to a dozen at a time, and sometimes over wider arcs.

Another attack to be wary of is his Putrid Bursts which are telegraphed by sickly pink hues on the ground. He can do this in opposing cone patterns around him, circling around until he completes the area of a whole circle surrounding him, so be wary of the telegraphs and move out of the way promptly. He'll sometimes mix this up and instead make the area outside of the circle, away from him, burst before making the smaller area around him burst so try not to get complacent with dodging. He'll also start to move around the battlefield more using his tendrils, while still generally being slowed than most Bosses.

After some time, he'll start summoning three Elites that will have their own Affixes. They won't pose much of a threat on their own, but Echo of Varshan will start channeling power from them one by one. It's in your best interest to quickly take note of which one he channels first and then kill that one immediately until you get all three of them. The channeling can be quick so you'll have to act fast. If he's able to successfully channel power from one of them, his attacks can have the added properties of rendering you Dazed and Poisoned, or he'll be able to refresh his shield more often, depending on which of the three Elites he successfully siphons energy from. The good news is that his move pool isn't too large and varied, so just keep your guard up as you deal damage and move away as necessary until you bring him down.

Attacks & Counters

Attack Counter
Phase 1
Putrid Tendrils: Varshan shoots out his tendrils to attack you while also firing putrid balls that spiral outwards. Dodge to either side and keep moving
Putrid Bursts: Varshan causes putrid explosions on the ground around him, varying in patterns. Move away from the highlighted areas
Putrid Call: Varshan summons three Elites to help him out. He'll start channeling power from each one of them. If successful, he gains different buffs depending on which one he successfully gets power from. One buff makes getting hit by his putrid balls render you Dazed. Another inflicts Poison with his attacks. Another will make his barrier refresh more often. Prioritize killing whichever Elite he siphons power from, or kill them all with Skills that hit multiple Enemies at a time

  • The Malignant Heart body part needed to summon him at World Tier 4 is not to be confused with the Malignant Hearts that were introduced during the Season of the Malignant. However, this is indeed the same Boss that players faced during that Season.
