Diablo 4 Varshan, The Consumed Strategy Writeup

Before going toe-to-toe against the newest boss Varshan, the Consumed, we have a few tips applicable to all classed listed below, before diving in to our strategy:

  • Optimize your build
  • Bulk up on Poison Resistance using an Elixir from the Alchemist
  • Prioritize killing off the mobs and use Crowd Control Skills
  • Learn his moves and how to counter each attack of Varshan, the Consumed
  • Consider forming a party

Before going into a boss fight, your build is composed of not only your Weapons & Equipment, but also take a moment to look at your Skill build, utility like Evade and of course your Healing Potions. You can stock up on this before proceeding to the boss area by interacting with a Blood Altar or a healer from any town. We also recommend crafting Elixirs, through the help of an Alchemist in any town. You can choose from any of the Elixirs with a Poison Resistance that matches your current level. At level 60, players can craft the Strong Elixir of Poison Resistance. Varshan can affect players with the Poison effect so if your character is on the squishy side, it is ideal to stock up on these.

Next up, once you are in the battlefield. Varshan will have minions to aid him in fight, mostly he will absorb these creatures and turn them into barrier that can absorb any damage that will be dealt to him. Make sure to eliminate the Minions first, and be wary of using any powerful skills before casting it, to make sure that you can directly damage Varshan and not the barrier. Be mindful of the attacks coming from Varshan. On the table to the left, you will see a list of his common attacks, and the most powerful is the Unholy Grounds. As mentioned earlier, his attacks will affect players with poison that can slow and eat away at your health if untreated during the fight. Varshan only has a single form throughout the fight, but what is notable about this boss is that his Unholy Ground attack becomes larger in area as the fight goes on. So take note and be ready to dodge as you get closer to defeating Varshan.

Lastly, to even out your odds in defeating Varshan, our final recommendation is to form a party. While killing this boss is certainly doable on a solo run, the fight gets easier when you have a party of 3 or 4. A solid team can easily take down bosses so you can grab their rewards. Varshan gives different drops depending on the World Tier, but the most common drop are the Malignant Hearts, Malignant Ichor, EXP, random Equipment, and Gold coins. From World Tier 1 & 2, he will drop an Invoker of Varshan, then at Tier 3 & 4, he can also drop Recipe: Foul Invoker of Varshan and Recipe: Tormented Invoker of Varshan, respectively.

The Foul and Tormented versions of the Invoker of Varshan are basically the same type of item, but with a higher tier and much more potent effects. This is a tool that will summon an Echo of Varshan, wherein the monster will spawn and players will fight it, then an event called The Echo of Varshan will commence, by doing this, you will be able to fight Varshan repeatedly and reap the rewards. NOTE: Players must use The Echo of Varshan by following a sequence of the basic one, then Foul Invoker of Varshan, then, ultimately, the Tormented Invoker of Varshan.

Attacks & Counters

Attack Counter
Phase 1
Tendril Chain: With the use of his tendrils, Varshan will execute a 3-chain swipe attack. These series of attacks can be fatal if all 3 will be dealt to your character.  The Tendril Chain attack is a series of light attacks from Varshan the Consumed. This attack becomes fatal when all of the hits are received by the character. Simply dodge or move away from Varshan to avoid getting hit by this attack.
Tendril Strike: Instead of a 3-chain attack, Varshan will now focus all of his strength directly in front of him and strike 3 times, similar to a stabbing motion. This attack has a longer reach compared to the Tendril Chain. A dangerously fatal Tendril Strike is composed of a 3-series of stabbing motions directly in front of Varshan. This is similar to the first attack except it is stabbing directly in front of Varshan. To avoid this, simply dodge or attack Varshan from behind.
Phase 2

Tendril Thrust: Varshan will use one of his tendrils to step out, and the rest of his body will follow. This performs a lunge while striking toward the direction of the first tendril.

Varshan is one of the bosses in Diablo 4 who barely moves. He doesn't have any of the swift mobility like others, and this move is one of the ways he will try to quickly get in contact with you. Players can dodge this by predicting the move as soon as one of the tendrils moves away from the body, get ready to dodge because the rest of the body will follow after him.
Unholy Grounds: This attack is identified by red markings on the ground, that will crawl from Varshan's body and will move outward. After a delay, the marked ground will explode violently forming a decay. This is an Area of Effect (AoE) type of attack and the affected area expands as the fight goes on. This is Varshan's deadliest move wherein he casts the Unholy Grounds. This is an attack sequence beginning from highlighting the ground with a red marking starting from his position, that will crawl outward. Players will need to watch the ground as the color changes because, after a delay, the ground will explode.

This will be followed up by smaller and more dispersed explosions around the area. Try to stay away from the red highlighted ground, as those are the ones that will explode.
