In DIablo 4, when you get a Legendary Item during normal gameplay, you can equip it to use the Aspect, or travel to the Occultist to Extract the Aspect from the Legendary Item, destroying it in the process. Once you have an Extracted Aspect, you can Imprint it onto any Rare Item or Legendary Item that you wish. If you Imprint a Rare Item, it becomes a Legendary Item, and if you Imprint a Legendary Item, it overwrites the existing Aspect gaining the new effect. You can also find Aspects from the Codex of Power.
Not all Aspects can be Imprinted to just any Rare or Legendary Item. Aspects are divided by category, and depending on its category it can be imprinted on different slots. See following for details

DIablo 4 Aspects From Legendary Items
The Codex of Power in Diablo 4, is a collection of Legendary Aspects you can imprint on your items at the Occultist to get your character started. You can imprint these Aspects onto Rare or Legendary items. They offer you a baseline selection of effects after you have completed specific Dungeons located around Sanctuary.
Using the Codex
One of the main advantages of using the Codex is that it's much easier to complete a dungeon once to unlock a Legendary Aspect than it is to find the perfect item. However, it's important to note that there are some limitations to using Codex Aspects, and that in most cases, finding a Legendary item will be a better option. To reach the highest levels of power, you'll need to unleash your skills and defeat the enemies of Sanctuary to uncover their treasures.
Some Limitations
The Codex of Power does not contain all the Aspects from every Legendary item in the game. Some Legendaries can only be obtained through traditional means, such as slaying demons repeatedly.
Aspects that are imprinted from the Codex of Power always have the lowest possible roll. For instance, if you imprint an Aspect that has a range of [15-30]% chance to deal Thorns damage to all enemies around you, the imprinted value will always be the minimum of 15%. This means that the power of the Aspect will be reduced by half compared to its maximum potential.
